Wartime bomb disposal officer and founding Professor of Horticulture at Nottingham University Tuesday 8 January John Hudson was a distinguished horticulturalist, teacher and research worker. Following wartime service in which his gallantry won him major awards, he went on in to become the founding Professor of Horticulture in the Nottingham University School of Agriculture.

This quickly became one of Britain’s leading centres of horticultural research and education. By , Hudson had already embarked on what was to be a lifelong career in horticulture. When war intervened, he volunteered to serve with the Royal Engineers and was part of the British Expeditionary Force which was sent to Normandy and was evacuated from Dunkirk in the summer of On his return from France, he attended a five-day bomb disposal course, for which he was selected because he had a science degree.

That the science was horticulture was considered irrelevant. On completion of this brief training he was posted to West Yorkshire where he helped disarm 31 bombs in eight days, after which he was posted to bomb disposal HQ in London. Because unexploded bombs could cause greater disruption than those that exploded, German scientists devised ways of making defusing difficult and hazardous. Hudson and his colleagues strove to keep ahead of the problems this caused, but were soon faced with a complicated device known as the Y-fuse, which incorporated batteries and mercury switches.

Any attempt to move the bomb to which they were attached resulted in its detonation. A method was devised to freeze the whole fuse mechanism by dripping liquid oxygen on it. Hudson was called to defuse a kg bomb fitted with such a fuse, near the Albert Bridge.

It’s likely she will want to put her own stamp on the place, like the Duchess of Cambridge did when she first moved in. Meghan’s new home already has plenty of fond memories for the former Suits actress as it’s the place where lovestruck Prince Harry, 33, proposed over a roast chicken dinner.

Splash News The US star, 36, also spent some of the festive season there last year and even picked out a tree from a local store with Harry. Looking at Meghan’s former home in Toronto she’s a fan of the minimalistic , monochrome look, alongside soft furnishings, coffee table books and floral arrangements. The idea was to have a “Californian bungalow” theme. Writing on her blog The Tig, that has now been shut down, she said the sunny decorations helped her stave off the “seven Canadian winters”.

While Kate remodelled the home when she moved in, Meghan is sure to give it her own make over. The couple will live together in Harry’s current home, Nottingham Cottage at the palace Image: It was remodelled into the palace by Christopher Wren – the same architect behind St Paul’s Cathedral. The house hasn’t had much work since, and the ceilings are said to be so low, Prince William had to “stoop” to avoid banging his head.

They moved out in the autumn after his birth to Apartment 1A – where Princess Margaret used to live. Prince Harry moved in shortly after that and has lived there ever since. He reportedly installed a hammock as one of his first changes.

Sunday lunch menu Welcome! The Travellers Rest is a welcoming 18th century country pub with stunning views over Mapperley Plains, this charming venue was once a halfway house for geese herders on their way to the famous Nottingham Goose Fair. An 18th century former halfway house, The Travellers Rest is situated in the rural Nottinghamshire village of Mapperley, flanked on all sides by Mapperley Plains, offering panoramic views across gently undulating fields. With its open plan layout, exposed beams and three open log fires, which are lit during the winter months, the pub has retained its cosy, olde worlde appeal.

And during the summer, diners and drinkers alike love to linger a while in the wide open beer garden, enjoying a bottle of fine wine or glass of cask ale, surrounded by the pretty Nottinghamshire countryside. The pub backs onto Lambley Dumbles, a pretty woodland dell where walkers can follow trickling streams that meander through patchwork fields, ancient trees and gurgling brooks. It’s a hidden gem, so quiet and tranquil, yet just a few miles from the hustle and bustle of Nottingham city centre.

Here, walkers can wander amongst some of the oldest trees in Europe, including the year-old Major Oak, and immerse themselves in the legend of Britain’s most famous outlaw, Robin Hood. And afterwards, head back to Mapperley Plains, to unwind and savour sumptuous pub food in the historic Traveller’s Rest pub. The first licencee was a farrier, who would first furnish his customers with a pint of foaming nut brown ale, then re-shoe their horses while they refreshed themselves.

The most popular patrons of the pub were said to be geese herders, who would stop in for a rest on the way to the famous Nottingham Goose Fair. The fair has run more or less continuously for over years — only the Great Plague of and the first and second World Wars have caused its postponement — and still takes place today. These days, however, you are much more likely to go there for candyfloss and a ride on the dodgems than you are to sell some geese!

History of Nottinghamshire Nottinghamshire lies on the Roman Fosse Way , and there are Roman settlements in the county; for example at Mansfield , and forts such as at the Broxtowe Estate in Bilborough. The county was settled by Angles around the 5th century, and became part of the Kingdom, and later Earldom, of Mercia. The name first occurs in , but until , the county was administratively united with Derbyshire, under a single Sheriff. In Norman times, the county developed malting and woollen industries.

During the industrial revolution , the county held much needed minerals such as coal and iron ore , and had constructed some of the first experimental waggonways in the world; an example of this is the Wollaton wagonway of , which transported minerals from bell pitt mining areas at Strelley and Bilborough , this led to canals and railways being constructed in the county, and the lace and cotton industries grew. In the 18th and 19th centuries, mechanised deeper collieries opened, and mining became an important economic sector, though these declined after the —85 miners’ strike.

Until , Nottinghamshire was divided into eight Wapentakes. Sometime between and , they were reduced to six — Newark , Bassetlaw , Thurgarton , Rushcliffe , Broxtowe , and Bingham , some of these names still being used for the modern districts. Oswaldbeck was absorbed in Bassetlaw, of which it forms the North Clay division, and Lythe in Thurgarton.

Nottinghamshire is famous for its involvement with the legend of Robin Hood.
